UCF researchers have created a self-cleaning mixture that uses photoactive agents with varying oxides to safely inhibit the growth of algae, fungi, mold, and bacteria. Unlike currently available solutions, where most surfacing agents are either toxic to both the environment and to humans or require frequent replacement with additional costs, this solution is non-toxic and comes with a low, one-time cost.
The coatings and agents can also be applied onto surfaces that are exposed to water such as aquariums, swimming pool liners, drinking water tanks, roofs, and most other surfaces exposed to water, moisture, condensation, and humid environments. Additionally, the mixture can be applied as a non-toxic algae-retardant marine paint.
The photocatalyst mixture can be easily mixed into a thermoplastic or rubber-like material and applied onto a variety of surfaces including roofs, the surface of external walls, thermoplastic structures buildings, and in swimming pools.
The photoactive agents, titanium dioxide and tungsten dioxide, are used with co-catalysts such as carbon, iron, copper, nickel or noble metals such as palladium, iridium, or osmium. The agents can be combined together and/or each agent can be combined with various coatings including a cement or polymer binder. When used in a thermoplastic, the coating of a thin thermoplastic layer of photocatalyst (2mg/cm2) provides strong, long lasting anti-bacterial/anti-fouling activity.
